A Theology & History
The Episcopal rite of ordination is rooted in the life and ministry of the ancient Church and has been received and shaped through the Anglican tradition. Through prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop, joined by the priests present, the Church invokes the Holy Spirit and ordains the candidate to share in Christ’s priestly ministry. The liturgy both affirms the Church’s discernment of God’s call and entrusts the newly ordained priest with the sacred responsibilities of proclaiming the Gospel, administering the Sacraments, and caring for God’s people.
Divine Call
Historical Roots
Symbolic Acts
Ordination is the Church’s public affirmation of a divine call already discerned through prayer, formation, and communal examination. Within the rite, the Holy Spirit is invoked to strengthen and equip the newly ordained priest for the ministries of proclaiming the Word, administering the Sacraments, and serving God’s people.
Rooted in the life and ministry of the early Church, the Episcopal ordination rite preserves ancient Christian patterns of prayer and the laying on of hands as they have been received and shaped through the Anglican tradition. In The Episcopal Church, these historic practices are expressed through the Ordinal in the Book of Common Prayer and adapted to the Church’s contemporary context.
Through prayer and the laying on of hands by the bishop, joined by the priests present, the Church invokes the Holy Spirit and ordains the candidate to the priesthood. Other symbolic acts—including vesting and the presentation of a Bible—express the new priest’s calling to proclaim the Gospel, administer the Sacraments, and serve God’s people.
